Note that you can still access Webmail after setting up your email account in your desktop client.  The two will be kept in sync.  If you read an email in your desktop client, it will be marked as read in webmail too.

First, I’ll provide generic settings that should work with any email client that supports IMAP (most do).  Then, I’ll provide a quick walkthrough of what’s required to get Uni Email up and running in both Outlook 2007, and OS X’s Mail.app.  Read on to find out how.

The Quick Version

These are the IMAP Settings for the Uni’s classic email accounts, that should work with any IMAP email client.

Incoming

Protocol:  IMAP

Server: mail.adelaide.edu.au

Port: 993

SSL: Enabled

Username: Your student number (a11xxxxx)

Password: Your Uni password

Outgoing

Protocol:  SMTP

Server: smtp.adelaide.edu.au

Ports: Default  (25, 465, 587)

SSL: Enabled

Authentication: Password

Username: Your student number (a11xxxxx)

Password: Your Uni Password

Outlook 2007

1.  From the Tools menu, click Account Settings.

2.  Open the Email tab, and click the ‘New…’ button.

3.  Tick the box ‘Manually Configure Server Settings or Additional Server Types’ and click Next.

4. Select ‘Internet E-mail’ and click Next.

5. Fill out your details, as shown in the screenshot.

Match these settings

6.  Press ‘More Settings’

7.  Go to the ‘Outgoing Server’ tab.  Tick ‘Outgoing Server (SMTP) requires authentication’

8.  Press ‘Log on using’, fill in your username and password, and tick ‘Require SPA’

Match these settings

9.  Select the ‘Advanced’ tab

10. Change the incoming port number to 993.  Set the encryption type for incoming and outgoing to SSL.

11.  Press OK

12.  Press Next

13.  Press Finish

Mail for Mac OS X

NB This guide was prepared using Mail 4.0 in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.  Steps may vary slightly in other versions.

1.  Open Mail

2.  Open the ‘Mail’ menu (immediately to the right of the Apple logo at the top of the screen, and from it select ‘Preferences’

3.  In the Preferences window, select the ‘Accounts’ icon at the top of the window.

4.  Press the ‘+’ icon at the bottom of the window.

5.  Enter your full name, and your full Uni email address.

6.  Press Continue

7.  When prompted, enter your Uni username and password, and press continue.

8.  Change account type to IMAP, enter a suitable description, and set the incoming mail server to mail.adelaide.edu.au

Match these settings for Incoming Server

9.  Press Continue

10.  In Outgoing settings, enter a sensible description, server address smtp.adelaide.edu.au    Use only that server, and use your Uni username and password.

Match these settings for Outgoing Mail

11.  Click Continue.

12.  Check the settings on the Summary page, and then press ‘Create’.

13.  Test the account by sending yourself an email from the new account.
