IT Tips: Using Classic Uni Email in Outlook, other desktop clients

Although the University doesn’t publicise the fact very heavily (if at all), you can access both classic Uni email, as well as UofA Gmail accounts via desktop email clients.  This article focuses on Uni email accounts of the non-Gmail kind.  This means that if you have migrated to Gmail, this article can’t help you.

Note that you can still access Webmail after setting up your email account in your desktop client.  The two will be kept in sync.  If you read an email in your desktop client, it will be marked as read in webmail too.

First, I’ll provide generic settings that should work with any email client that supports IMAP (most do).  Then, I’ll provide a quick walkthrough of what’s required to get Uni Email up and running in both Outlook 2007, and OS X’s Mail.app.  Read on to find out how.
