Social Justice

The Social Justice Officers are committed to actively defending and promoting issues of social justice in the law. The officers provide students with a broad range of experiences that give a real world perspective on the legal issues most affecting the wider community. There are three main roles:

- to listen and respond to student complaints with respect to discrimination;

- to promote work experience opportunities relating to social justice and the law; and

- to run events and services which raise awareness about social justice and the law.

If you feel you have you been the victim of unfair treatment or that a law school policy is discriminatory, you should contact your Social Justice Officers Bethany Hender, Jack Rabl and James Krumrey-Quinn by emailing socialjustice@aulss.org.au with details of your grievance. Our Officers will work to resolve your issue, offer support and act as an intermediary with the law school. Total confidentiality is guaranteed.

WALK FOR JUSTICE

JusticeNet is a clearing house for the provision of pro bono legal services to clients in civil matters.  As many of you know, JusticeNet is housed on the 4th floor of the Law School.

Every year a Walk for Justice takes place to raise funds for pro bono services in South Australia.  This year the 3rd annual Walk for Justice will take place on Monday, 17 May. The walk will start and finish in Victoria Square and is a pleasant 5km stroll around the CBD followed by a complimentary light breakfast at the Hilton Hotel.  Chief Justice Doyle AC will lead the walk.

Registration is $15 per walker or $5 for students.  The LSS hopes to have a large group of students attend from Adelaide Law School. To register your interest in this great event, contact socialjustice@aulss.org.au More information is available from www.justicenet.org.au.

SOCIAL JUSTICE COMPETITION

Stay tuned for details of the new Social Justice Competition to be held in Semester 2.

Social Justice Work Experience Opportunities

The Law Careers Guide for 2010 includes a greater amount of material on non-commercial opportunities. In particular, Social Justice has worked to include information on a range of human rights and international internship opportunities through publishing a greater number of student articles and through the addition of a substantive directory. New opportunities will be posted as they arise throughout the year.
