Every year, in addition to the general LSS positions, there are two ‘First Year Representative’ positions available exclusively for First Year Law students (one boy and one girl).
What does a First Year Representative do?
- The role of the First Year Representative is primarily about bringing the LSS’s attention to issues that are specific to First Year Law Students – They are the “voice” of First Year Law students.
- First Year Representatives also assist with other LSS portfolios, which include Activities, Education, Careers and Sponsorship. They also attend monthly LSS meetings to collaborate with these portfolios.
- First Year Representatives are also given the exciting opportunity to get to know fellow Law students from different year levels.
How can I get involved?
STEP 1: Check whether you are eligible
- You must be enrolled in Torts I from Week 3, Semester 1, 2011 onwards.
STEP 2: Nominate yourself
- Nominations open at 9.00am on Wednesday 16 March 2011 (Week 3).
- Please do not email your nomination prior to this date/time. Your nomination will only be accepted after this.
- You can nominate yourself by emailing your name and a digital photograph of yourself (so voters can identify you) to education@aulss.org.au.
- Nominations close at 2.00pm on Wednesday 23 March 2011 (Week 4).
- Please do not email your nomination after to this date/time. Your nomination will only be accepted before this.
STEP 3: Address your peers
- If you have nominated yourself, you will be given the opportunity to address your peers on one of two days:
- Before the Foundations of Law lecture at 11.00 am on Thursday 24 March 2011 (Week 4); or
- Before the Torts I lecture at 11.00 am on Friday 25 March 2011 (Week 4).
- These introductions will only last a minute, but will be an opportunity for you to introduce yourself to your peers, so they can get to know a little about you and why you would be a great First Year Representative.
STEP 4: Vote, vote, vote!
- Voting for one boy and one girl First Year Representative will take place in the Law School Foyer (Ligertwood) over two days:
- 11.00-1.00pm on Wednesday 30 March 2011 (Week 5); and
- 11.00-1.00pm on Thursday 31 March 2011 (Week 5).
- To be eligible to vote you must be enrolled in Torts I from Week 3, Semester 1, 2011 onwards.
- Results of the voting will be sent to students on Monday 4 April 2011 (Week 6).
Is there anything else I need to know?
- If you are interested, make sure you put the above dates/times in your diary, so you don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity!
- Excessive campaigning for First Year Representative elections is strictly not allowed. (So, no putting up posters!) – The introduction opportunities at lectures in Week 4 will provide an adequate opportunity for you to “sell yourself.”
- For amenity reasons, Eveyln Johns (AULSS Education Representative) will be the Returning Officer for these elections and will ensure that all relevant election protocol are complied with.
What if I have any questions?
- Should you have any questions, please email Gabrielle Golding (AULSS Vice President (Education)) and Evelyn Johns (AULSS Education Representative) at education@aulss.org.au.
Being on the LSS is a lot of fun and you will make many friends along the way. We strongly encourage you to get involved and be the next First Year Representative!
