About
Competitions provide students with an opportunity to get involved in the law school, meet fellow students, and learn new skills in a relaxed student atmosphere. Let us stress that you do not need to know “the law” to compete, you just need a great attitude and a competitive streak! If you are feeling a bit apprehensive why not sign up for a team competition or a non-competitive role? We always need students to act as clients for Client Interviewing or as witnesses for Witness Examination. Remember, competing in law competitions looks great on your resume!
Depending on participation there are generally two rounds for each competition and then a final. They are held on weeknights and details for next year’s competition will be emailed to all students early in semester 1.
Each year the winners of the finals are eligible to represent Adelaide University at the National Championship Finals held at the Australian Law Students’ Association’s Annual Conference. In 2008, Adelaide teams performed exceptionally well, with three teams making the finals, and the Red Cross International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Moot team winning! They then went on to represent Australia in Hong Kong in March 2009, where they reached the semi finals and Varin was named 3rd best oralist.
In 2009 the Conference was held in Brisbane from July 13-19. Again Adelaide teams performed outstandingly with the Open Moot team, consisting of Hannah Canham, Rachael White and Georgia Goldsworthy, winning the ALSA Moot. Hannah also was named best oralist for the minor rounds. UniSA, Flinders and the University Adelaide have won a joint bid to host the Conference in Adelaide in July 2010.
To prepare our competitors for the annual national competition, an intervarsity competition against Flinders and UniSA is held. This year the event was held in the Adelaide Law School moot court.
In semester 2 first year students have the opportunity to compete in the First Year Moot, which has the same structure as the open moot competition but is limited in content to the law of Torts and Contract.
