The University has recently announced a new programme entitled “Apple on Campus“:

Apple on Campus is a new and exciting partnership between the University of Adelaide and Apple. Current staff and students are entitled to get up to 12% off the RRP of selected Mac computers, around the clock, through an exclusive online store!

This discount is only available to current University of Adelaide staff and students, for the duration of the agreement, along with additional promotions and discounts on Apple accessories and software.

Visit alumni.adelaide.edu.au/apple for more information, and to access the store.

While Apple’s online store has always offered discounts to University students (visit apple.com.au/edu), “on Campus” appears to offer greater savings.

For example, the base level MacBook retails for $1599 generally, and is reduced to $1499 on the general student store. On the “on Campus” website though, it sells for around $1439.

The top of the line Mac Pro is discounted by over $800 (but would still cost you more than $5000 to buy)

Unfortunately, the store does not seem to offer discounts on iPods and iPhones.

Note that before purchasing any Mac online, it may be worth checking the prices offered by Unibooks.

Unibooks is South Australia’s only Apple Authorised Campus Reseller! That means that students and university staff, you are entitled to up to 10% off the recommended retail price for Apple computers software and accessories! (conditions apply)

Unibooks is South Australia’s only Apple Authorised Campus Reseller! That means that students and university staff, you are entitled to up to 10% off the recommended retail price for Apple computers software and accessories! (conditions apply)

If you know of any other student discounts we should publicise on the aulss.org.au website, please leave a comment.

Although the University doesn’t publicise the fact very heavily (if at all), you can access both classic Uni email, as well as UofA Gmail accounts via desktop email clients. This article focuses on Uni email accounts of the non-Gmail kind. This means that if you have migrated to Gmail, this article can’t help you.

Note that you can still access Webmail after setting up your email account in your desktop client. The two will be kept in sync. If you read an email in your desktop client, it will be marked as read in webmail too.

First, I’ll provide generic settings that should work with any email client that supports IMAP (most do). Then, I’ll provide a quick walkthrough of what’s required to get Uni Email up and running in both Outlook 2007, and OS X’s Mail.app. Read on to find out how.

The IT Services website says that a Wi-Fi configuration guide for the iPhone and iPod touch is ‘on the way’. But there’s no reason that you can’t connect your iPod to the Uni’s Wi-Fi network right now.

Read on for a step-by-step guide to connecting your device.

Of course these instructions need to be followed on-campus, at somewhere covered by the Wi-Fi network. See the ITS Coverage page for maps.

1. Open Settings, select Wi-Fi, and turn Wi-Fi on.

2. Look for and select a network called ‘UofA‘

Select the network UofA

3. You will be asked for your username and password. Enter your University credentials and press join.

Enter your University username and password

4. Accept the University’s security certificate.

Press Accept

5. You will now be connected to the Uni’s Wi-Fi network. However, at this stage you will only be able to access sites within the University (eg MyUni, Access Adelaide) and you will need to set up proxy settings to be able access any websites in the wider Internet. Touch the Blue Arrow next to the UofA network.

Tap the Blue Arrow next to UofA

6. Scroll down to the HTTP Proxy section, and tap Auto.

Tap Auto under the HTTP Proxy section

7. In the URL field, enter http://www.adelaide.edu.au/digest-proxy.pac

8. Tap Manual. Enter the following info:

Server: www-proxy.adelaide.edu.au

Port: 8080

Authentication: ON

Username/Password: Your Uni username and password

Fill in details as above

9. You should now be connected. Open Safari, and go to a website to check its all working.

Caveats

1. You can only access content outside the Uni over HTTP and HTTPS. This won’t mean much to many people, but the upshot is that some applications will not work. Some will – Google Maps for example normally works fine on Uni wireless, but Facebook and Twitter applications generally don’t. iPhone users can switch off Wi-Fi and access the applications over 3G. iPod touch (or iPhone for that matter) users can try and use web based versions of these, such as iphone.facebook.com

2. Email accounts generally don’t seem to work, with the exception of Uni Email (the traditional, non-Gmail kind) and possibly some Exchange accounts where they run over HTTPS. For Gmail accounts, access using the iPhone interface via Safari. It should automatically detect you are using an iPhone/iPod touch, and give you a properly formatted page. Either that, or on iPhones, turn off Wi-Fi and use mobile data to check your email.

3. Any data used comes out of your University quota. In most cases, this should prove cheaper (and faster) than using mobile data though.

4. The Uni can probably track what you’re doing. No more so than any other device on their Wi-Fi though. I don’t have an issue with this, but some people might.

If you have any questions at all, please leave a comment at the bottom of this post. And if you have anything you’d like explained in another ‘IT Tip’ leave a comment too.
